Armidale Station – Repairs to Chimney Stacks
COMPLETION REPORT (Report wording PDF)

  1. Generally
    7 chimney stacks to the principal station building were repaired following Tierney Consulting Engineer’s Structural report dated 3 March 2015 by Australian Heritage Restoration between June and August 2015. Additional engineering direction was given by Matthew Tierney during the works. Long Blackledge Architects as a subconsultant to Futurepast Heritage Consultants provide advice on repair specification and materials as well as undertaking 2 inspections of the works.The works were inspected on 6th August 2015 and deemed practically complete by William Blackledge and Matthew Tierney. Chris Bart (Director of AHR) and Damian Andrew (Foreman) attended the final inspection.
  2. Stack 1
    Stack work complete.
    The slight drumminess of the render was now tight.
    Works undertaken:

    • Helifix reinforcement of stack
    • Loose corbels fixed or replaced
    • Render repairs
    • Stack tension reinforced as engineer’s detail.
    • Stack capped with s/s capping
    • Silicate painted
  3. Stack 2
    This stack was supported by a grid of 4 no. RSJ’s girding the stack in the roof space.
    The stack is tension reinforced but because of a kink in the flue there is no connection between the tensile rods and the existing RSJ’s. DA confirmed and showed photographs of steel angle strutting providing additional support to the stack at roofing plane. In addition the brickwork around the RSJ’s was helifixed.
    There is a slight wobble but considerably less than originally found.

  4. Stack 3
    Stack work complete.
    Works undertaken:

    • Helifix reinforcement of stack
    • 6 corbels replaced
    • Render repairs
    • Stack capped with s/s capping
    • Silicate painted
  5. Stack 4
    Stack work complete.
    Works undertaken:

    • Helifix reinforcement of stack
    • Render repairs
    • Stack capped with s/s capping
    • Silicate painted
  6. Stack 5
    Stack work complete.
    Works completed:

    • Helix of stack
    • Render repairs
    • Upper section rebuilt and helifixed down to older work.
    • Stack capped with s/s capping

    DA cut the silicone from the stepped cover flashing. DA reported he had seen no leaks associated with this stack since completion of the works.

  7. Stack 6
    DA confirmed the stub flue was removed, the condition of the upper part of the stack brickwork was poor and that section was rebuilt and re-rendered.

    • Stack capped with s/s capping
    • Silicate painted

    Black mesh screen to be fixed over fireplace beneath.

  8. Stack 8
    Stack work complete.

    • 2 corbels replaced
    • Render repairs
    • Stack tension reinforced as engineer’s detail.
    • Stack capped with s/s capping
    • Silicate painted
  9. Outstanding/additional works as of 6 August 2015
    1. D will seal off the gas inlet supply to prevent use of the obsolete gas fires in the waiting room and the booking office.
    2. MT will provide his structural certification
